The images on display in this exhibit are a visual record of fascinating discoveries made during natural science exploration. They were published in reports of 18th- and 19th-century sailing voyages. Many have been preserved for over 300 years–a reflection of how museums and libraries have long valued these meticulous observations.
Original printed engravings and lithographs such as these document the history of collections that formed the basis of some of the world’s most prestigious institutions: The Smithsonian, The British Museum, and The Museum of Natural History in London.
