Often called the "Father of American Ornithology", Wilson's published the first comprehensive book on American birds with colored plates. An excellent field observer, he traveled extensively, mostly on foot, collecting, describing, and classifying more than 300 bird species. He managed to issue seven volumes in just six years but intense overwork weakened his constitution and he died in 1813 before his great work was completed.
