The Bishop & the Apothecary
In early 17th century Germany, The Prince Bishop of Eichstätt, Johann Conrad, created a splendid garden. His palace was perched high on a rock with gardens descending in terraces to the river below. It contained every shrub and flowering plant then known in Europe. He determined to have a record made of all that was growing there and commissioned Basil Besler, an apothecary from Nuremberg, who had advised him on the layout of the gardens, to create a monumental picture book of the plants.
