The Maximus Gallery art collection shows how many of the greatest scientific illustrators saw the world in this visual record that spans 300 years. Uniquely dedicated to the preservation of antique prints, the Maximus Gallery has a focused mission: to display and interpret works of art portraying natural history subjects from the 17th to 19th centuries.
Collection Facts
- Nearly 100 prints from The Birds of America by John James Audubon were donated in 1923.
- The earliest is a small woodcut from a famous German herbal dated 1543.
- Most of the world’s most celebrated natural history artists are represented.
