Preserving Audubon
During the Museum’s early years in 1923, a large donation of prints by the artist, John James Audubon from his magnificent work, The Birds of America, was received from Carpinteria resident, Mr. Wolcott Tuckerman. This gift formed the nucleus of our print collection. Created in 1860, these prints were in need of attention. Acidity in the paper had caused them to yellow and become brittle. Some had been trimmed to fit in frames and needed restoration. In 2007 we began a multi-year project to restore these rare and valuable prints.
