One of the variations on the engraving process was printing in color. In France, Jean-Baptiste Audebert developed a technique employing oil based inks which can be seen in his beautiful illustrations of monkeys and lemurs. The color printing method was a secret process he never revealed. During a visit to London, the artist, Pierre-Joseph Redoute, was introduced to the concept of stipple engraving and a method of adding multiple colors to a single plate which was a forerunner of modern color printing. Recognizing the potential of the medium, he took it back to Paris where he worked with skilled engravers until he achieved a perfect fusion of art and science.
