Jean Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800)
Jean-Baptiste Audebert was born in Rochefort. A painter by training, his first publishing endeavor was the preparation of plates for a work on insects. He later issued his most important work on the natural history of monkeys and lemurs with the wonderfully expressive portaits of these mammals. Audebert was both naturalist and illustrator of this study, engraving 63 plates then supervising their printing in color with oil based inks using a secret technique which he invented. Unfortunately, after his untimely death at the age of 41, his method was lost. He was also known for a book on birds called Oiseaux Dores Ou a Reflets Metalliques he published with Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot.
