Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782)
Duhamel du Monceau was an outstanding botanist and horticulturist of the 18th century and among the most important French writers on fruit, plant physiology and agriculture. He was born in 1700 in Paris and studied law before returning to Paris to work at the Jardin du Roi. He wrote several manuscripts on fruit trees including the one that this plate is taken from, theTraite des Arbres Fruitiers. He hired the artists Claude Aubriet and Ma(g)deleine Basseporte to illustrate the 16 different fruit species and multiple cultivars included in the work. Duhamel authored several more books during his lifetime.
