Niccolo Gualtieri (1688-1744)

Niccolo Gualtieri was a doctor, malacologist, and professor at the University of Pisa where he taught zoology, geology, and botany. He amassed a large collection of shells providing the subject matter for his work on conchology published in Florence in 1742. He served as physician to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de Medici who also had a shell collection including 360 specimens sent to him by Rumphius. Gualtieri's collection is now depositied at the Museo storia naturale di Pisa. His full-page engraved portrait appears in his famous book on shells.
