Friedrich Wilhelm Martini (1729-1728)

Frederich Wilhelm Martini conceived the idea of publishing the first large-scale encyclopedia of shells illustrated with hand-colored plates. His ambition was to describe every kind of shell known; one virtually impossible to fulfil. He died after the third volume was in print. Publication was continued by Johann Chemnitz, a Danish clergyman who added a further eight volumes.
