Albertus Seba (1665-1736)
Arguably the greatest natural history collector of his age, the Dutch apothecary Albertus Seba attempted to bring together "all knowable things," by purchasing rare shells, exotic animals, butterflies, sea creatures, minerals, and fossils from sailors returning from worldwide exploring expeditions. He had a particular interest in snakes, devoting most of the second volume of his Thesaurus, the last one finished prior to his death, to their study.
