Prideaux John Selby (1788-1867)
Selby typified the wealthy aristocratic Englishman who became interested in natural history at an early age. He compiled careful notes on the lives of local birds and published a popular atlas of British birds for which he did manyof the drawings and copper plate etchings.
His illustrations have an austere beauty in contrast to the more romantic scenes painted by Audubon. The two men met and became friends and Selby invited Audubon to stay at his estate at Twizzle House.
