The 12 volumes on quadrupeds from Buffon’s encyclopedic work on natural history published in 18th-century France, included domestic and wild animals–both local and exotic. The original engravings shown here were done by Buffon’s illustrator, Jacques de Sève, who portrayed them with strangely human faces and rich settings
