Spencer F. Baird (1823-1887)

Spencer Fullerton Baird was only 27 when he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Among his accomplishments was overseeing government expeditions including the Pacific Railway Surveys for scientific exploration of the western territories of the United States. His writings covered a broad range of zoology and in particular ornithology.
