James Bateman (1811-1897)

James Bateman had an early interest in botany and horticulture that his father encouraged during his years at Oxford.  
Bateman later became an enthusiatic orchid hobbyist and established a fine collection of the plants at the family home at Knypersley Hall.
He hired collectors to search for orchids in South America that he established and flowered in England He consulted with John Lindley called " The father of modern orchidology". He wrote several books on orchids from the monumental Orchidaceae of Mexico and Guatemala to a Monographs of Odontoglossums.
